7 Common Types of Scaffolding

Scaffolding or scaffold are temporary structures build to support workers during construction, repairs, and or maintenance. The primary purpose of a scaffold is to help workers access great heights, which would be otherwise impossible. Since its creation, scaffolding has evolved to become integral
equipment of laborers. Moreover, since no tasks are similar, scaffolds have also developed into various forms. Now, scaffolding companies design scaffolding depending on the different jobs undertaken by workers. Here are some of the popular forms of scaffolding

1. Single Scaffolding: One of the oldest types of scaffold, single scaffolding, is popularly used in brick masonry. It is commonly found in such constructions, thus giving it the name, the brick layer’s scaffolding. It consists of standards, ledgers, putlogs, etc. which are precisely calculated and placed to provide the desired support.

2. Double Scaffolding: Double scaffolding is primarily used in stone masonry, and therefore it is sometimes called mason’s scaffolding. There are two significant differences between a single and a double scaffold. Firstly, as the name suggests, in a single scaffolding, one row of standards is fixed. Whereas, in mason’s scaffolding, two rows of standards are fixed. Secondly, in single scaffolds, one putlog is attached to the wall. On the contrary, the putlogs in double scaffolds are supported by ledgers. Because it stands independently, double scaffolding is also known as independent scaffolds.

3. Cantilever Scaffolding: Needle Scaffolding or Cantilever Scaffolding are scaffoldings that are placed above the ground level. The platform stands on is called a needle. Although it has limited usage, cantilever scaffolding can be found:

(a) when the ground does not have the capacity for standards
(b) when the site needs to stay clear
(c) when the top portion of a building is under construction

4. Suspend Scaffolding: Suspended scaffoldings are platforms suspended from the roofs of a
building using ropes. The advantage of this system is that it allows workers to adjust the height according to need. Because it gives freedom to change, suspended scaffoldings are commonly used by painters.

5. Trestle Scaffolding: In trestle scaffolding, the platform is placed on tripods or ladders. Because it can only be extended to five meters, its usage is limited to indoor activities.

6. Steel Scaffolding: As the name implies, steel scaffoldings are made using steel tubs, which are then attached to steel couplers. Although an expensive option, steel scaffolds are often preferred due to its various benefits like (a) ease of mantling & dismantling, (b) higher durability, (c ) higher fire resistance, and (d) greater safety of employees.

7. Patented Scaffolding: Patented scaffolding is made from steel, but the differences are that it is ready-made and equipped with special couplings and frames. The working platforms are set on brackets, which allows them to adjust the level as per the requirement.
